How to Move a C-Arm Safely: A Hot Shot Carrier’s Playbook
C-arms are among the most delicate imaging systems in any facility. Here is exactly how a professional white-glove team packs, transports, and places them without downtime.
Why C-arms need specialized handling
A mobile C-arm packs a high-voltage generator, an image intensifier or flat-panel detector, and precision optics into a single articulating frame. That frame is top-heavy, unevenly balanced, and extremely sensitive to shock and vibration. A single hard bump during transit can knock calibration out of tolerance or crack a detector that costs more than the move itself.
Because of that, C-arms should never travel on a shared LTL freight truck where they are loaded, unloaded, and re-handled at multiple terminals. Every extra touch is another chance for damage. This is exactly the scenario a dedicated hot shot carrier is built to eliminate.
Step 1 — Pre-move assessment and lockdown
Before anything moves, our team documents the unit’s condition with photos, records the model and serial number, and confirms the manufacturer’s transport position. Most C-arms have specific lockdown points and a stowed configuration that protects the C-ring and monitors during transit.
We lower the C to its lowest, most stable position, engage all transport locks, and secure cabling so nothing swings or snags. Loose accessories, foot pedals, and monitors are removed and packed separately.
Step 2 — Padding, crating, and load securement
The unit is wrapped in moving blankets and closed-cell foam at every contact point, then secured with soft straps that will not abrade the housing. For long-haul or international moves, we build a custom crate with foam bracing and shock indicators.
Inside the truck, the C-arm is loaded onto an air-ride deck and strapped to prevent any forward, lateral, or vertical movement. Air-ride suspension is the single most important factor in protecting imaging equipment on the road.
