Two Digital X-Ray Systems, One Truck: A Hot Shot from Richmond, VA to Raleigh, NC

Two digital X-ray systems picked up at two Richmond, VA sites and delivered to Raleigh, NC in one dedicated hot shot run, with no terminal transfers.
A digital X-ray room usually has to move on a deadline. An imaging suite is waiting, an install engineer is booked, and the equipment can't sit on a freight dock. On this job, a medical imaging customer needed two digital X-ray systems picked up from two separate locations in the Richmond, VA area and delivered to Raleigh, NC, and both had to arrive on time.
The challenge
Each system has two main parts: the X-ray tube and detector, which ride on a rotating U-arm mounted to a floor column, and a separate generator cabinet that powers the unit. Both parts are heavy, top-heavy and full of sensitive components. LTL freight would have meant terminal transfers and extra forklift handling, which raises the risk of damage to the tube, the detector or the system's alignment. The customer needed one dedicated truck, a driver who knows medical equipment, and a straight run to Raleigh.

The plan
We set it up as a dedicated multi-stop hot shot.
- Two pickups, one route: We loaded at the first Richmond location, drove straight to the second, then headed south.
- Site coordination: Before dispatch we confirmed dock access, elevator sizes, door widths and on-site contacts at both pickup sites and at the Raleigh delivery.
- Disconnect and prep: At each site the systems were disconnected from facility power before pickup, and the generator cabinets traveled with their matching units so everything arrived together.

On the road
Every component was:
- Loaded by liftgate, kept upright and never tipped or dropped
- Secured with soft straps at approved points, away from the tube head, detector and cable hoses
- Wrapped in moving blankets and stretch film to keep out dust, moisture and vibration
- Kept on the same truck with the same driver from Richmond to Raleigh, with no cross-docking
The Richmond to Raleigh run is about 170 miles, roughly three hours of driving. The customer got updates at each pickup and when the truck left for Raleigh.
The result
Both X-ray systems and their generator cabinets arrived in Raleigh undamaged and ready for installation. Putting both pickups on one dedicated truck cost less than booking two separate shipments, and both systems were delivered together.
